John Nelson

My Professor

John just sent me an email about this.  I’m hoping he will join us here on bebee.com.  John was my favorite writing instructor.

“Antioch Review Author to Appear in

“Pushcart Prize XLII: Best of the Small Presses (2018 edition)

“Author John R. Nelson’s piece “Funny Bird Sex” will appear in The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses (2018 edition). Nelson’s work appeared in the Winter 2016 issue “’Funny Bird Sex’ and other Miscellaneous Tales” of TheAntioch Review.

“Editor Robert S. Fogarty noted:

“Our lead essay. . .was about birds and one of their essential activities—copulation. At first glance that might suggest one thing, but on closer examination, our author, John Nelson, opines that it is many, varied, poignant, comical, and just like human copulation.

“Nelson resides in Gloucester, Massachusetts and is active in bird conservation and nature education. His “Birds of the New World” essay appeared in the Winter 2015 “Chance Encounters” issue of The Antioch Review. Nelson’s essay “Birds and War” appeared in the Fall 2015 issue of The Massachusetts Review and The Missouri Review published his essay on the fallibility of observation and memory, “I Saw What I Said I Saw: Witnesses to Birds and Crimes” in their Winter 2015 issue. Nelson is also the author of Cultivating Judgment, a sourcebook for teaching critical thinking skills across the curriculum.

“The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses is the most honored literary project in America. Founded by independent spirits and published since 1976, it is “one of the last bastions of non-corporate writing.”*

Each year, magazines and small book editors submit works for consideration in Pushcart’s annual anthology. Publication in these pages is coveted and respected in the small press literary world.
